I am using an RX6600 with 8GB in SD and it is no faster than generating on the CPU, an R5 3600. This is not knocking AMD, but a statement of fact about the strengths and weaknesses of their product lineup. For gaming, which is what 99.9% of people looking at a graphics card care about, their GPUs offer compelling price/performance and maybe better drivers and overclocking options than nVidia at this point. AMD’s workstation GPUs are beasts for CAD or video editing, in large part because the drivers for their workstation products are just that good. But for SD, go to eBay or Craigslist and get a used 2060S or higher, with no less than 8GB and 12GB or 16GB is better if that’s within your budget. More RAM on the graphics card is more betterer for SD, though if it’s just a hobby right now (summer 2023) I can’t justify buying a 4090 just for this unless you have literal money to burn. If you’re using SD for a business where you need to generate a lot of stuff quickly, then for you time is money and by all means whip out the credit card. But for the casual user who just wants to see Beavis & Butthead as GTAV cover art, the juice is not worth the squeeze.
Also you can run SD on a 2GB card if the GPU is nVidia and it’s the Maxwell architecture or later, just start it with the –lowvram option. It won’t be fast, but it will run.
